[Japan looks different, and yet oddly feels like home in a way. A home that hasn't existed in centuries, that is. Of all the places that Merlin's visited over the years, Japan reminds him of Albion in certain ways, though it's different in so many others. Perhaps it's the way the land feels, a mix of the old and new that should feel chaotic but somehow isn't. Both lands surrounded by the vast ocean, both now filled with new religions and resurgences of the old. The "pagan" as some might call it. Like Albion, the creatures of old have retreated into the shadows, no longer visible as they once were, but still there. Just like magic.

Merlin's only been in Japan for a few days, when trouble finds him, as it always does. One moment he's sitting in a nice cafe to enjoy a quiet lunch, the next there's some cries of alarm as one of the cafe's other patrons collapses. Before he knows it, Merlin's got a firm grip on the person trying to flee the scene--a friend?--shaking his head as they babble in fear. ("It wasn't me, I don't know what happened!")

Thinking ruefully of the lunch he never ordered, Merlin figures he might as well settle down and wait for the police to arrive. It's going to be one of those days.]

Two weeks flew by in what seemed like the blink of an eye. It was odd, in a way, considering how slowly everything had seemed to move forward before. That was one good thing about traveling with the Doctor. One tended to forget everything else when they were moving backwards or forwards through time and space, as if time could no longer touch them. As if time didn't matter any longer.

But the truth was that it did still matter. As much as Merlin liked traveling in the TARDIS, letting himself get swept away in all the wonders of the universe that he'd never have thought were real before, a part of him knew it was only temporary. The Doctor had said it himself without actually saying it. The companions he'd taken with him before--where were they now? Merlin didn't know how long his stay in the TARDIS would last, but he knew there was a favour he had to ask of the Doctor before the chance slipped by him.

Merlin slouched against the rail, fingers clenched tightly around the ends of his scarf. They were drifting in space for a while--something needed a bit of a tune up, apparently--and they hadn't made plans for their next trip just yet. It was now or never.

"Hey," Merlin began, voice gravelly. He stopped to cough. "Doctor? Where do you think we'll go next?"

The train taking Souji from Inaba had long left the station, but Rise felt like life in Inaba had stopped there on the platform. With Souji gone and the case resolved, what more was left for her? A week later, Rise still had no answer.

It was true that the members of the Investigation Team were close, but there was also no doubt Souji had been the glue that held them all together. It had been Souji who sat down with them and assuaged their fears and worries. Where did that leave the rest of them with him gone? Rise had woken up just days earlier, realizing she had no clue what Yukiko's life inside the inn was like, or where Chie liked to go when she wanted to train, or even what kind of music Yosuke was always playing on those earphones of his. That scared her, the thought that their cozy little group might fall apart because the center piece was gone.

She decided then that she'd make an effort to know all of them. They accepted her for who she was, idol troubles and all, and she'd be the empty-headed ditz everyone thought she was if she let friendship like that go. Kanji was first on her list.

Sometime during the next week, Kanji would receive the following text:

Just weeks ago, if someone had told Edmund he'd think about giving up his kingship for some peace and quiet, he'd have laughed in their faces. It had taken some time for them to clean up after the battle at Beruna, their coronation following closely on its heels.

Today, the siblings had held their first council meeting, and it had gone about as well as expected, with several major hitches. Even Peter, usually so even-tempered had been getting increasingly agitated throughout the discussions. Susan had tensed up noticeably when it was decided Peter alone would lead a patrol along their borders to drive out the remnants of the White Witch's army. As for Edmund, he hadn't missed the thinly veiled suspicion directed his way when he offered to attend a diplomatic event in Peter's stead.

The meeting left a bitter taste in his mouth that would not did not disappear even after he entered the royal wing that he and his siblings shared. The rich fabric of his perfectly tailored tunic suddenly made his skin itch and the collar suddenly felt too constricting. Edmund stood in the middle of the richly decorated common room, eyes wandering over the tapestries, the paintings in silence.

[it all started with the Hunters. Or, more specifically, when Jo turned them down. Before then, the Aphrodite kids had just been annoying. Giggling here and there, refusing to take part in activities because of how it would ruin their insert-appearance-thing-here, etc. Annoying, but there were plenty of them she could handle. Deal with. Some of them were even kind of fun to hang out with.

But then she ate breakfast with Merlin at his table - because he was lonely and she wanted to spend more time with him so what - and she felt their eyes on their backs the entire meal. She could tell they were plotting something, but she couldn't figure out what. All that she knew was they were getting way too close to Merlin and she didn't like it. At all.

She just turned down immortality for Merlin (granted, he didn't really know that, but still she did) and suddenly the Aphrodite cabin had incredible interest in him. During activities, lunch, capture the flag...two weeks went by and Jo just bit her tongue, stormed off when she got mad, anything you would think of that probably just confused Merlin further. That was, until she had a conversation with the head of the Aphrodite cabin, one of the few girls with an actual head on their shoulders.

you're jealous she'd told her. 'Am not.' yes you are. 'No I'm-' and then followed a long-winded discussion about how Jo is oblivious when it comes to boys and the over protective feelings she has are because she cares, likes, perhaps even loves Merlin and she should do something about that. And that's where the conversation ended, leaving Jo with more to think about than she ever wanted.

But that also meant that the Aphrodite cabin shenanigans annoyed her even more. So when she walks down the pathway between cabins and sees Merlin and one of the older Aphrodite girls talking...well. Jo always did have anger issues.]

It was a jolt, when it finally hit him. With the Investigation Team back together--really together, as soon as everyone started remembering again--it was as if everything had fallen back into place. They were no longer in Johto, and sometimes Merlin still missed being woken by Ambrosius or even being given Nineve's disdainful-but-affectionate looks when he did something particularly stupid, but they were making a new home for themselves. That was what mattered the most.

He had gotten swept up in the joy of being surrounded by people who knew him again. That was the only reason Merlin could give for forgetting something so important. It hadn't sunk in as the years passed, or even when Souji's uncle had been sent to the hospital for a heart attack. Only when he'd overheard the nurse telling Souji that the case had been "too much excitement for his old heart" did the fog lift. Merlin looked at his friends, really looked at them, and saw the maturity in the shape of their faces and some lines that hadn't been there before. And Nanako...she'd grown out her hair, liked to keep it long nowadays, and somehow he'd missed her shooting up like a tree over the past couple of years.

The dark green frames pressed uncomfortably into his skin as Merlin's fist clenched. Suddenly, the hallway was too narrow and the air too heavy for him to breathe in. "Gonna head outside for a sec, guys," he choked out and near stumbled away. His hands didn't stop trembling even when he sank onto a bench in the small, outdoor area of the hospital.

Once Merlin had fallen asleep (or passed out, whichever), the Doctor had a room made for him in the TARDIS and brought him there, taking his boots off and tucking him in.

Then he went back to the control room, and plunked down on one of the chairs as he took a deep breath. Right, then... What was Merlin? He would have to ask him a few questions, but, obviously, he had lived for a very long time and that had to mean... Well, obviously he was capable of using all kinds of energies that was surging through the universe, and had an unusual connection to anything in it.

Unusual, not impossible, but it had been a long time since the Doctor had run into one of those. He had never taken one onto the TARDIS either. And this was Merlin, so there would obviously be something in that and...

Oh, this was exciting. Very exciting. Another person, another mystery, and if he had a say he would keep Merlin around and eventually things would become clear. And he had a feeling it was going to be brilliant.

He might as well be vibrating with anticipation.

But, Merlin was probably going to be asleep for a decent while, and so he stood up to find a quick adventure somewhere.

By the time Merlin woke up, though, he would be standing at the controls sporting a differently coloured shirt and bowtie.

Unbelievable. Even when airbending is the only bending she has access to, she still has trouble with it. It had worked perfectly when she needed to save Mako, so why couldn't she do it now?

Tenzin, of course, had plenty to say on that, and it'd almost felt like that first week she lived in the city again. She'd brushed him off with a terse "whatever" and left the island as quickly as she could.

Why Korra had decided to make the old probending arena her new place of solace, she has no idea. The irony of picking the arena to mull over her lost bending doesn't escape her, but at least the place is quiet, the general populace kept out during its reconstruction. Coming here usually gives her a couple hours of alone-time--a couple hours that would be extremely welcome after that air bending lesson. Korra takes a seat high up in the stands, tilting her head up until she can stare through the broken dome of the roof. Though it isn't raining, the sky is grey and cloudy in what Korra considers a perfect reflection of her current mood.

There wasn't much they could do for her once Katara had given her verdict. Whatever Amon had done to her, it couldn't be cured, even with Katara's skills.

What else could she do? Mope? Been there, done that. She'd sat out on that snowy ledge for hours, caught in a loop of self-blame and bitterness and anger until Naga had finally whined in distress and nudged at her until she trudged back into the hut.

Before Republic City, even the smallest setbacks had felt like disasters, and she was free to sulk, wrapped up in her own troubles until she either got over it or her diligent White Lotus keepers got fed up. With the city in an uproar over Amon's defeat and Councilman Tarrlok's disappearance, Korra couldn't afford luxuries like that anymore. She'd accepted the responsibilities of the Avatar as soon as she decided to stay with Tenzin--she knows that much at least. Her smiles feel fake, and her enthusiasm is all but gone, but helping Tenzin oversee the city's recovery progress is better than doing nothing. It's her duty. It's important. It's just a mercy that they've all managed to keep her bending troubles under the radar, else she's sure the papers would have a field day with it.

In the short moments she has to herself, Korra takes to wandering the shop districts alone, her hood pulled up as a flimsy shield for her identity. While she appreciates her friends' support, she doesn't want the pity that's sure to creep into their gazes at one point or another. The conversations turn stilted when any of them brings up something innocent, like the reconstruction of the probending arena, and they stumble in their haste to change the subject to something "safer". Korra scoffs. She isn't delicate by any means. She hates that they feel like they need to tread carefully around her now when she never asked for it.

She just wants things to go back to the way they were before.

There were times Merlin thought people just got more and more cracked in the head with time, rather than the other way around as one might have thought. He'd seen many, many stupid things in all the years he'd traveled, but this had to be one for the lists. At the top, no less. Only someone with something to prove would dare to build anything on an active volcano.

Rubbing at his cheek with exasperation, Merlin--Emerson to everyone else nowadays--grit his teeth and sought more people out. The energy coming from the ground in Mount Teide was difficult to ignore, even when he muted his connection to the Old Religion. Merlin tried not to lose his temper as he was turned away again.

They didn't have much time left. Mind racing, Merlin looked out from the observatory deck, out to the imposing, twisted shapes in the crater. He could use magic, he realised. He wasn't above a little magical persuasion, if that's what it took to save a good chunk of the island's population.

[ It has been a while since Souji has had those "dreams"; dreams of being in some Pokemon world, living a completely different life than the one he has now. At first, he has completely dismissed them. Why wouldn't he? Everyone has strange dreams now and then, and being trapped in a video game? It sounds like a typical kid's fantasy and it's not like Souji has ever wished for that before as a young child. So he ignores them and continues with his days, studying in the city and occasionally keeping in contact with his friends back in Inaba. He completely forgets about that other world for a while, until he has another dream. ]

[ Again, he doesn't think much about them and keeps going on with his life, but they keep on coming back and more frequently. At a certain point, he has started to think that this is real and maybe, he has actually been to a place called Johto for some years, but that's ridiculous. It's completely illogical, but at time, it just feels too real. If he tries think on it, he has these "memories". "Memories" of friends like Kagami or Daisuke or something called a Breeding Centre, and the more he dwells on it, the more he "remembers". He "remembers" laughing about the colour of his hair, getting into fights, being stressed out, blowing money on coffee, a relationship, everything, and it confuses him all the more. What is he to believe in now? ]

[ However, he doesn't mention any of this to anyone. What is everyone going to think of him? Certainly not straight in the head, so he keeps quiet about it and acts like nothing is going on, like he has never had those dreams in the first place. He keeps trying to tell himself that dreams are dreams and he can't focus on them any longer. He's in his final year of high school and he can't fool around, but as time goes on and the clearer he can make of these dreams, he finally asks someone about it. ]

[ It's not he has asked "oh hey, do you remember living in a Pokemon world?" or anything. He leaves it vague and asks what reoccurring dreams might mean, just saying he's asking out of curiosity or he's writing an essay about it, and the first person he gives this question to, it's his old English teacher and team member in Inaba. Mr. Wyllt has always been supportive of Souji and has stayed after school with him countless amount of times for extra help. Plus, Mr. Wyllt is one of the few adults that knows of the TV world and have helped the Investigation Team in it, so he is someone that Souji can say that he deeply trusts the man with his life. Also... the man has appeared frequently in these dreams, but going by the name of "Merlin". He's not too sure what this means, since "Merlin" is the only one, other than the Investigation Team and his family, to also appear in the real world, or at least have someone look almost identical to him. However, they just couldn't be the same person. The Merlin that he knows is centuries in the past and probably long dead, but why does it feel like Souji knows for certain that Mr. Wyllt and Merlin are the same person? Nevertheless, he pushes that thought to think about for another day and writes his old teacher a letter, saying that he's doing well, how things are going, asking the same, and ending it with the question of reoccurring dreams. ]

[ It's been almost a week now that he has sent that letter and his curiosity and confusion has been weighing on Souji just as heavily then. Thankfully, it's a Sunday and he can relax at home, not having to focus on school with all this on his mind. He has been staying home more these days, rather than going out and coming back in the evening, wanting to just take it easy, so that's exactly what he's going to do. He's just going to sit around, drink a nice cup of coffee, and read a book. He won't think about anything else but relaxing today. Besides, he doesn't have any visitors planned, so today is going to be nothing but a calm day. ]

[ He hopes... ]

[Some time in between the battle with Izanami and the start of the new school term, the much changed world inside the TV had become his place of solace. The fog-covered, dangerous dungeons of the old world had been replaced by wide, sweeping landscapes that reminded him of Camelot. Of Johto. Places like this are difficult to find in the modern world, even in small, rural Inaba.

As soon as he'd been convinced the others wouldn't regain their memories, Merlin had made a habit of stopping here from time to time, releasing Viridios just to stir up a wind like he'd have felt in either world he'd once called "home."

He does that now, standing in a field of wildflowers, his Persona hovering close. In such a place, it's easier to let his thoughts drift to his argument with Yosuke just a week before, to wonder how things had gone so wrong and if there is a way to put everything back to the way it was before.]

The realization had dawned on him sometimes through one of Mr. Yamada's creepy lectures, and he's been shaking with frustration since then. Even though both Chie and Yukiko were eying him cautiously through class, Yosuke left no time for it to be questioned.]

[It's storming straight down the stairs, and bursting through the door to the once-abandoned English classroom, approaching the one qualified teacher of the subject, and standing in front of him, arms folded and eyes narrowed.]

....Merlin. [This is probably only out of the ordinary due to his expression, but despite the fire in his eyes, his disheveled hair and the dark circles, paled cheeks -- it may be a familiar sight that implies there's much more than meets the eye.]
